France qualify for semis in style

France 5:2 Iceland. First half goal blitz settles tie.

France sent a statement of intent to Germany ahead of their semi final with a comfortable win over Iceland. Striker Oliver Giroud set the ball rolling in the 12th minute when he hit a trademark volley through the goalkeeper's legs from a defence splitting Matuidi pass.

Paul Pogba opened his account for the competition when his header off Antoine Griezmann's corner kick found the corner of the net in the 20th minute.

Dimitri Payet then put the game to bed when his low left footed shot found the bottom right corner in the 43rd minute.

Griezmann grabbed a goal of his own when put through on goal by an Olivier Giroud flick on a deep pass from defence. He coolly lobbed the advancing goalkeeper to score the fourth of the game in the dying minutes of the first half.

The second half started with a response from Iceland as midfielder Sigthorrson scored a near post tap in to give Iceland some pride.

Olivier Giroud restored the four goal lead with an header before Iceland scored the last goal of the game; a well placed header by midfielder Bjarnason.

France sets up a date with Germany on Thursday while Iceland leaves the competition with their heads held high.
