Real Madrid wins UEFA Super Cup

Real Madrid have won the 2016 Super Cup after an entertaining encounter that almost went all the way at the Lerkendal Stadion in Trondheim, Norway.

Real Madrid were without Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale courtesy of their extended holidays after their EURO 2016 campaign and started with a "weakened" team as 20 year old Marco Asensio, Alvaro Morata and Lucas Vasquez led the attack. Sevilla on the other hand had the luxury of fielding a full strength team.

Despite Real Madrid bossing the game for the early exchanges, it took 21 minutes before the first goal came, and what a goal it was. Marco Asensio pounced on a loose ball, took a touch and rifled it into the top corner from about 30 yards out.

Sevilla, who are no stranger to giant killings then looked to set up another episode as they equalized through Franco Vasquez in the 41st minute after Vitolo's cross was deflected into his path. And they completed the comeback when Sergio Ramos as usual brought down someone in the box, Vitolo this time and Konoplyanka buried the resulting spotkick.

The game progressed and at the 93rd minute, when Sevilla fans were literally lifting the Super Cup in their minds, the villain turned hero. Ramos continued his latest knack for scoring in European finals as he buried a cross from Lucas Vasquez to level the game. Imagine the reaction of the Sevilla fans. How cruel soccer could be sometimes!

The game then needed 30 extra minutes and Real Madrid naturally had some clear cut chances but couldn't make them count. But once again, in the 119th minute, Dani Carvajal decided that some other defender should steal the spotlight for once, the short and stocky right back simply left defenders for dead as he danced all the way to the net and buried the winning goal.

Hala Madrid!!
